Our approach

As a responsible investor, we are committed to ensuring the balanced, sustainable growth of our businesses, while prioritising the social and environmental wellbeing of our communities.

Our sustainability strategy, ‘Building Towards 2030’, provides a clear framework for Jardines and our portfolio companies to respond to evolving global megatrends and build long-term resilience. The strategy focuses on nine key areas across three pillars: Leading Climate Action, Driving Responsible Consumption, and Shaping Social Inclusion. These pillars are aligned with five of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We actively engage stakeholders to gather input on our sustainability priorities. Their feedback guides us in refining our strategies to address climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequalities, fostering trust and goodwill.

Leading climate action

Climate action is our top priority. At Jardines, we support a Just Transition to a low-carbon economy. We are uniquely positioned to support this transition as we work with our stakeholders to achieve  net-zero by 2050 – building a resilient, low-carbon future for Asia. We leverage our unique expertise to turn climate risks into opportunities, embedding climate action into our core business decisions and investments.

Our material topics include:

Decarbonising Jardines

Decarbonisation has been a major focus area of Jardines’ sustainability strategy, which supports our ultimate ambition of reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, in line with climate science. In 2021, Jardines developed a framework to guide the decarbonisation efforts across the Group.

Climate risk management

Climate risk management involves the mapping of climate risks and developing mitigation measures to future proof our businesses. For details of climate risks, impacts and mitigation measures, please refer to Jardine Matheson’s TCFD disclosures.

Building climate resilience

We build climate resilience by understanding and accessing the impacts of climate change on our business, adjusting our strategy and financial planning accordingly. This drives our spirit for innovation in building a future-fit business as we are increasingly focused on ensuring our investment opportunities align with sustainability goals.

Driving responsible consumption

We want to grow our business sustainably by balancing growth and progress with the preservation of our natural resources for future generations. We use our collective scale to transform business practices across the region. By investing in circular technologies, expanding sustainable products, and turning waste into value, we are inspiring a collective movement towards a regenerative future.

Our material topics include:

Resource management and circularity

Our portfolio companies work together via the Responsible Consumption Working Group (RCWG) to explore circular opportunities that help reduce waste sent to landfill.

Minimising our impacts on nature

We are in the early stages of defining nature-based ambitions as a Group, with a clear commitment to biodiversity through sustainable operations and procurement. Recognising the impact of environmentally sensitive businesses, we work closely with them to adopt best practices and operate responsibly.

Revive and thrive

Shaping social inclusion

We create long-term sustainable value by investing in current and future generations, building stronger communities. Through localised investments in education, health, and livelihoods, and by mobilising our colleagues through volunteering, we work to empower communities and foster resilience where we operate.

Our material topics include:

Improving education

Jardines supports education through scholarships, vocational training and building schools to support more equitable access to education for current and future generations. This commitment is further strengthened through the Jardine Foundation. Founded in 1982, the Foundation offers full scholarships to students at top universities in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Vietnam and the UK.

Promoting health & wellbeing

We prioritise the physical and mental health and wellbeing of our colleagues and communities. Cultivating holistic health literacy and helping vulnerable individuals recover and reintegrate back into society can greatly benefit our communities.

Supporting livelihoods

Our businesses strive to improve access to opportunities which enhance the quality of life among our colleagues and communities where we operate.

Policies and commitments

Jardines recognises the need to integrate sustainability into our corporate strategy and have robust governance to build trust and credibility with our stakeholders. Our policies and commitments are anchored in a holistic sustainability strategy that spans environmental stewardship, responsible business practices, and social empowerment. These policies and statements underpin our operations, enabling us to build a stronger, more resilient business that is well-prepared for the future.
