Jardine Matheson celebrates annual Green Month and encourages employees to embed sustainability into their daily lives

Green Month is an annual month-long campaign organised by the Jardines’ Volunteering x Green Team to promote sustainable change in the behaviours of Jardines employees’ and to develop an employee-led culture to conserving the environment.

This year, Green Month was held with a keen interest to encourage employees to “embed sustainability into their daily lives”. More than 200 colleagues in the Jardine Matheson Head Office, as well as several other Jardines business units participated in various activities including online webinars, knowledge challenges, and even tree planting volunteering initiatives.

Kick-off webinar in collaboration with Sustainability Report release

Held in collaboration with the release of the Jardines’ inaugural Sustainability Report in June, Green Month kicked off with a panel discussion which included Jardines’ sustainability representatives discussing on the value and purpose of sustainability reporting, and how it relates to their different business operations. The webinar also served as a good platform for employees to post questions and offer feedback on sustainability reporting.

Reforesting Hong Kong’s mountainside

To encourage colleagues to play an active role in the Group’s sustainability journey, Jardine Matheson Head Office, Jardine Engineering Corporation (JEC), and Jardine Restaurants Group (JRG) collectively organised a reforesting initiative where 100 volunteers from the various business units planted 200 tree seedlings on Hong Kong’s mountainside.

Held in conjunction of the Group’s 190th anniversary, this event saw colleagues from different backgrounds and businesses join hands to participate in the meaningful inaugural project. While on the mountainside, employees were also educated on environmental conservation and saw first-hand on how they can all play a part for the environment.

Building habits and relearning behaviours

Green Month also saw several initiatives including a “Green Knowledge Quiz Challenge”, which sought to test and educate colleagues on sustainability-related topics, and a “14-Day Green Challenge” which helped colleagues build green habits in their daily lives.

A select group of colleagues were also given the opportunity to join a guided tour of Y Park, Hong Kong’s yard waste management facility where they learnt more about recycling and got to explore the facilities.

Green Month has been growing strength to strength since it kick-started in 2021. At Jardines, being more sustainable and environmentally-conscious is not only the right thing to do, but also supports the long-term sustainability and success of our businesses.
