Tze Wey CHONG
Hi there! My name is Tze Wey. I was born and raised in Malaysia, and I am especially proud of our rich culture and diverse food selection.
While my initial inclination towards economics stemmed from its interdisciplinary nature, which led me to explore areas such as social entrepreneurship, impact investing, and labour economics, I have also grown to appreciate its empiricism. The emerging branch of complexity economics is particularly fascinating as it reshapes our approach to modelling our economy by accounting for factors that were previously overlooked due to behavioural discrepancies. Perhaps someday, economic models will not just be helpful but will tend towards offering a more accurate representation of our world to address its rapidly evolving issues.
I enjoy reading about historical developments to delve into the root issues and their contributions to our existing systems. My favourite way to explore these links is by visiting museums and galleries, which often ends with far too many photos of me with the statues and artworks.
I am generally an arts-oriented person, with an interest in dancing, playing the harp and completing craft projects. I am eager to expand my list of hobbies and try new sports at university. My weekends are mostly spent with family, including my dog, who, coincidentally, has the same birthday as me.
Feel free to reach out for a chat—I am always keen to explore new perspectives and opportunities!
Area of Expertise:

Qualifications:
Associate in the Latin American Branch of the World Dance Council Professional Examinations (Highly Commended)

I have an immense passion for learning the language of English and teaching it. To me, English language is my medium of expression. Driven by my distinctive goals, I have strived and thrived to give my 100% effort in anything and everything I set foot into. Originally from Vietnam, I left for my undergraduate studies in Singapore (Nanyang Technological University – NTU). Little had I known back then that I would eventually decide to pursue the life of a researcher, all thanks to the kindness, guidance, and inspiration from Dr Dragoslav Vidovic – my very first supervisor! Upon graduation, I was accepted to the DPhil programme at the University of Oxford, under the tutelage of Professor Simon Aldridge (The Queen’s College), and I was privileged to have my doctoral studies supported by the Jardine-Oxford Graduate Scholarship. The scheme has also allowed me to connect and form valuable friendships with fellow Scholars from across Asia-Pacific over the years. When I was not exploring novel bonding motifs between main group elements, I often spent my time on Queen’s cricket ground every Trinity term, or in badminton halls when the weather got chilly. At the moment I am currently working as a Post-doctoral Research Fellow (PDRF) in the group of Professor Richard Layfield (University of Sussex), exploring the multi-faceted reactivity of f-block elements, after two Singapore-based PDRF stints with Professor Rei Kinjo (NTU), and Associate Professor Huynh Han Vinh (National University of Singapore – NUS). By now perhaps one could say that I have a soft spot for both Singapore and the UK!

Chun Wa CHAN
I am a 2nd year Jardine-HKU Scholar studying BBA in Accounting and Finance. Being a businessman wearing a suit has been my lifelong dream, and this summer break I made it come true. I joined the Summer Internship Programme in the Inland Revenue Department, where I was required to audit Tax Returns assessed in previous years and interact with taxpayers. Through this programme, I not only learned a lot about tax-related knowledge, but I also discovered some of my shortcomings, such as not being careful enough and realizing that I should always maintain a broad perspective. This has given me a goal to improve and has made me a better person. I always enjoy interacting with children, so I have been a part-time secondary school tutor teaching accounting throughout the year. I hope to use my expertise to teach students in need as a token of giving back to society. Whenever I add jokes to my teaching to make my students laugh or help them understand concepts that they have been confused about for a long time, I gain a sense of accomplishment, which gives me more motivation to teach. One of my hobbies is traveling. Experiencing different cultures and delicacies is interesting to me. It provides me a channel to relax and get rid of the hustle and bustle of student life temporarily. With my strong interest in traveling, I find great motivation to pursue part-time jobs.

Tsz Ho ZHANG
My name is Zhang Tsz Ho, and I am currently pursuing a degree in Speech-Language Pathology in the Univeristy of Hong Kong , driven by my passion to assist underprivileged individuals in the community, particularly children with special educational needs and elderly individuals facing swallowing difficulties. As a future speech therapist, I find immense job satisfaction in witnessing the improvement in my patients' quality of life following treatment, and I aim to enhance their communication and swallowing abilities. I envision dyslexic children making significant progress in their reading and writing skills, empowering them academically and socially. Similarly, I strive to enable elderly individuals with swallowing difficulties to enjoy meals safely. However, I have observed that there is a widespread misconception about the role of speech therapists, often limited to helping children speak, while in reality, we serve individuals of all ages and play a vital role in society. With the aging population on the rise, more elderly individuals are affected by strokes and related challenges, increasing the need for awareness about speech therapy. I also recognize the barriers that adults who stutter face, particularly in finding employment, which underscores the importance of targeted treatments. To address these issues, I plan to raise public awareness through talks, workshops, and collaborative projects with peers, organizations, and government bodies. By highlighting the critical nature of speech therapy, I hope to reduce the risks associated with communication and swallowing difficulties, ultimately contributing to the betterment of society

I was born in 2005 in a middle-class family in China and finished high school there. I am currently studying at Downing College, University of Cambridge as a freshman majoring in Natural Science (Physical), and one of the 2024 Jardine Scholars. I read many books and watched some documentaries about physics and astronomy when I was in kindergarten and elementary school, since then, my goal has been set, which is to become an astrophysicist or theoretical physicist in the future, to explore more about our universe. Moreover, after realizing how beautiful and useful science is, I also wish to contribute my efforts to the popularization of science. Both of my parents, who love me and always view my education as a top priority, encouraged me to chase my dream. They told me that they will support me to go to the best university at all costs, even if that means that we need to sell our only apartment. Apparently, this means a terrible drop in daily life quality. Fortunately, the Jardine Foundation decides to help me pay for all my tuition, daily costs, and many other things, including health insurance and even air tickets. I am so thankful for this since all my family’s financial pressure has gone now so that I can fully focus on my studies and chase my dream.

Thi Bao Tien HO
Growing up in the far South of Vietnam, the idea of mental health was strange and stigmatized to me. However, I immediately got hooked when studying biological sciences and psychology during my undergraduate years. I was especially interested in PTSD, curious at how much external stressors can alter cognition. This curiosity drove me to return to research to destigmatize mental health disorders by erasing the myths that only weak people succumb to these. I explored how available research techniques can help answer my questions during my Master’s. The experts I worked with during this time shared their passion and visions for neurosciences, where multiple disciplines come together to solve problems. This experience motivated me to propose a collaboration, leveraging advanced molecular and MRI tools to answer my research questions. My DPhil will apply MRI to map molecular to structural and functional changes following stressors in a mouse model of PTSD, searching for potential biomarkers and therapeutic candidates for the condition. Eventually, we will compare our research findings with MRI data of individuals identified as PTSD susceptible and resilient to better relate experimental findings from our mouse model and facilitate knowledge transfer from the laboratory to clinical applications. It is an honour to return to the University of Oxford as a Jardine scholar for my DPhil. Besides the opportunity to continue my research, I am excited to network with inspiring individuals passionate about improving life quality through research from all disciplines. I am eager to collaborate with like-minded scholars to bring research closer to the general public.
