MINDSET
Making a Positive Impact on Mental Health
MINDSET is a registered charity in Hong Kong founded by Jardine Matheson in 2002, focused on making a positive and sustainable difference in mental health – a vitally important yet under-resourced area of global concern.
With operations in Hong Kong and Singapore, we collaborate with a number of mental health organisations and NGOs, advocacy groups and corporate partners, with the aim of raising awareness and changing perceptions of, and attitudes to, mental health. Our mission is to challenge stigma through the education and empowerment of individuals to enable them to share with, and support, one another. We also provide direct assistance to people with mental ill-health.
Follow us on
We work collaboratively with government agencies, healthcare service providers and NGOs to strengthen and develop the fabric of mental health support within our communities. Our partnerships provide resources and expertise, which in turn allow us to develop comprehensive and effective mental health campaigns and programmes to ensure that those who are in need of mental health care have access to appropriate support and resources.
Strategic partnership with Mind HK
A Strategic Partnership between MINDSET and Mind HK was established in 2019 to develop our shared vision and mission to improve mental health awareness and reduce stigma towards mental health issues in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong Mental Health Conference 2020
The Hong Kong Mental Health Conference 2020: Youth in Focus was our first flagship project. More than 40 local and international speakers shared their research findings and insights on youth mental health in this three-day hybrid event. It was very well received, with over 1,600 participants, including medical practitioners, educators, social workers, business professionals and youth. For more details, please click here.
Low Intensity Intervention for Young People Training Course
In view of the increasing need for access to early intervention for Hong Kong youth, MINDSET and Mind HK launched a training course on low-intensity interventions for young people using an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) framework in mid-2021. Using a model similar to the UK’s Children and Young Person’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (CYP-IAPT) initiative, the programme will train a new cohort of practitioners to work with young people (aged between 12 and 24) experiencing mild to moderate psychological distress using a low-intensity, manualised intervention based on the principles of ACT. This training and the related research will be conducted in collaboration with King’s College London and Hong Kong Baptist University. For more details, please click here.
Anti-stigma Campaign
Supported by evidence-based research, the Anti-stigma Campaign is being rolled out until 2023 across Hong Kong. People with lived experience of mental health issues will be trained as Ambassadors to share their stories and advocate for mental health through public events and media engagement.
Health-in-Mind Programme
In collaboration with Kwai Chung Hospital under the Hospital Authority, we have developed the Health-in-Mind ('HIM') Programme for Hong Kong adolescents since 2002. The programme aims to empower secondary students as advocates to promote mental health to fellow students, their families, and the public at large through interactive activities and experiential personal development training. The programme has achieved significant success, with 97 local secondary schools participating and over 130,000 students, teachers and parents having benefited so far.
We leverage an extensive network across the Jardine Matheson Group and in our communities to support mental health advocacy in the business community through information sharing and synergising with business units, corporate partners and community partners.
Other than empowering and educating employees about mental health and creating positive and accessible workplaces, our group companies and corporate partners also offer holistic programmes such as career coaching, training and job placement opportunities to aid the smooth transition of individuals in recovery back into the workforce.
The funds that we raise through donations and various fundraising activities are used to invest in programmes that provide direct services and support to people experiencing mental ill-health, their carers, as well as their families.
Below are a few of the fundraising initiatives organised across the Group and some key funded projects:
Walk Up Jardine House
Walk Up Jardine House is one of the best-known fundraising events organised by MINDSET. Hundreds of Jardines colleagues, business associates, families, secondary school students and friends in recovery walk or run up the 49 floors of Jardine House to raise funds for MINDSET.
The 2019 Walk Up Jardine House event raised HK$3.4 million.

MINDSET College
A pilot programme in Hong Kong, ‘MINDSET College’ is an educational platform which provides recovery-focused training and courses on mental health and self-management. As well as offering courses co-produced and co-delivered by both people-in-recovery and professionals, ‘MINDSET College’ also helps students find their own solutions and become experts in self-care by focusing on their potentials and strengths. Through the programme, it is hoped that students can go through a journey where they can pursue opportunities to realise their goals in life and, in the process, learn how to maintain good health.
