MINDSET Job Training Programme Impresses Australian Conference
Nancy Chan, General Manager of Group Human Resource (HR Services), Jardine Matheson Limited, represented MINDSET to speak at the 2008 NSW Mental Health Consumer of the Year Awards in Sydney organized by Australia's Consumer Activity Network (Mental Health) Inc ('CAN') at New South Wales Parliament House on 18th September 2008.
CAN is an organization where people living with mental illness (referred to by the mental health sector as 'consumers') help their peers reintegrate into society. The Annual NSW Mental Health Consumer of the Year Awards recognizes the contributions mental health consumers made within the Australian community.
At the ceremony, Ms Chan explained why the Jardine Matheson Group chose to focus on the mental health sector and shared the Group's experiences on how the private sector can play a role in supporting mental health.
In particular, she elaborated at length about the training and job placement opportunities offered within the Group for the ex-mentally ill, and the successes and challenges encountered in implementing the programme.
"By arranging workshops for frontline managers from various business units within the group, we aim to enhance their understanding of how the ex-mentally ill can contribute in a workplace, so that we can find more appropriate training opportunities," said Ms Chan.
She shared with the audience a number of successful cases, including one in her department who became a permanent staff after a two-year part-time stint.
"Our experience is that it is necessary to be patient with the ex-mentally ill. Giving them a lot of encouragement and guidance has seen proven successes," said Ms Chan.
She concluded, "One important thing I'd learnt from my visit is that the people I met at the award ceremony were very open that they were consumers themselves, and these are professionals in responsible positions in the community.
"I hope that by advocating mental health awareness and de-stigmatization through our MINDSET initiatives, we can see in the community an open and receptive attitude towards the mentally-ill."
NSW Mental Health Consumer of the Year Awards頒獎典禮,並擔任演講嘉賓。
NSW Mental Health Consumer of the Year Awards正是要表揚精神康復人士對澳洲社群的貢獻。
